We proceed west on the Withlacoochee river and continue up river. The Withlacoochee River (or Crooked River) originates in central Florida's Green Swamp, east of Polk City. It flows west, then north, and then turns northwest and finally west again before it empties into the Gulf of Mexico near Yankeetown. The river is 141 miles long. It remains relatively undeveloped in comparison with the Rainbow River and gives the viewer an idea of what these rivers looked like before the invasion of European settlers. Large Florida Sandhill Crans, Cormorants, Anhinga, White Abis, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron and the Little Blue Heron among others are typically seen. We leave the tannin colored waters of the Withlacoochee for the crystal clear water of the Rainbow River. The Rainbow River is a gently winding river that is 5.7 miles long. The crystal clear water, abundant fish, wildlife and vegetation along with a constant water temperature of 73 degrees, has attracted a number of modern day activities. Our tour is the only one that can go under the state road 484 (Pennsylvania Ave) bridge enabling us to travel father up the river than other tours.
